Getting Positive

Too much time is spent seeing negative images and hearing negative words. apples-635240_1280

Getting and staying positive takes practice…

So how do you practice developing a positive attitude? Here are a few practical steps you can take:

  • Avoid being judgemental of others, especially in the work environment or when out with friends. When you spend too much time belittling others, you aren’t spending enough time developing yourself
  • Be aware of the inner critic – what messages are you sending to yourself about yourself that hold you back. Record these messages for a week, you’ll probably be shocked at how many times you call yourself an idiot, stupid, clumsy, etc. If you tell yourself you are these things often enough and with conviction, you’ll deliver on them.
  • Be assertive in your communication, say what you feel and think, just ensure you take ownership of those and do not externalise them (‘you made me feel’ needs to be replaced with ‘when you did ‘X’ I felt’…). Your feelings and thoughts are your choices!
  • Spend time remembering the wonderful things that have happened in your life. Focusing on good times lifts your spirit. Enjoy that feeling and carry it with you, tapping into the images and feeling whenever faced with a challenging situation.
  • Be mindful of the people you spend time with. Are they positive or are they always feeding negativity into your life? Is that what you want?
  • Do something for someone else. It doesn’t have to cost anything, it doesn’t have to be earth shattering. Most people are just delighted when a fellow human being does something caring for no other reason than they wanted to.
  • Look after yourself. Eat well, exercise often and develop your mind. When you take care of you, you attract more of that care into your life.
  • Let go of the guilt, hate, unforgiving thoughts. These will grip you like a vice and remove the joy from your life. But you have the choice to let go…

And here are a few favourite positive thinking quotes for you to consider:

“Attitudes are contagious.  Are yours worth catching?”

Dennis and Wendy Mannering

“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.”

Anthony J. D’Angelo, The College Blue Book

“The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude.”

Good advice! I once worked in management at a major retailer where the culture made it forbidden to talk about “problems”. There were only “challenges” to overcome. At first I thought it was ridiculous to engage in this kind of doublespeak, but I soon came to appreciate the positive attitude these kind of expressions fostered.

Excellent, thanks for sharing Terry. We know that life isn’t one smooth journey but it is how we approach it that makes the journey great or a struggle…
