The Chatter Within – Who’s Voice is it Anyway?

The answer is yours of course! Yes, that annoying and often judgemental name caller is YOU! fight-1974291_1280And it is time to nip it in the bud. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to address it… it is an irritating interference when trying to move forward and as such must be kerbed.

This is a 2 part exercise for you:

Part 1 – Over the next 3 days, I want you to list each time you hear yourself criticising you (from ‘don’t be stupid’ to ‘idiot’ and anything else). It doesn’t matter what the situation and it doesn’t matter if you catch yourself halfway through saying it. Note each occasion and the words you use.

After day 3 I want you to review the list? How did you do? Did you find that you criticised yourself less because you knew you were listening for it or couldn’t you help it?

Part 2 – For the consecutive 3 days I want you to note the inner critic and for every comment you note I want you to think of a replacement word or phrase, one that truly reflects what you want to say. For example; you spill your tea and call yourself ‘clumsy’. What could you have said instead of clumsy? Maybe: I’m going to be more careful when I’ve got hot drinks nearby or thank goodness I managed to only spill the drink in the saucer.

What’s the point? It’s about retraining your chain of thought and it is crucial for moving forward. If you are constantly putting yourself down is it any wonder you find it acceptable for others to do the same? Or even if you do not let others get away with it, you are conditioning yourself to think about you in a negative way.

I do this little exercise on a regular basis. I catch my thoughts and unravel them. It is such a good way of getting rid of bad habits.

As always I’d love to know how you get on so for those of you who have mastered your inner critic post a tip and for those who are working at it, what are your thoughts? It’s good to share!

Live Blissfully!
