‘Whether you believe that you can or you can’t, you are right’ Henry Ford
It’s one of those quotes that make you think the person is either too blasé for their own good or they know what they’re talking about; I go with the latter…
I remember back in 2009 when I was beginning the creative process of my current business I set myself a goal to write a book by Dec 2009. I had never written a book before, I certainly didn’t know what I was going to write but I figured that there was plenty information within that might be worth letting out!
And so the process began. I decided that I wanted it to be pressure free and therefore I would spend just 15 minutes per day at the end or beginning of the day capturing my thoughts. As it turned out (and to cut a long story short) I ended up writing 365 short inspirational and thought provoking verses; one for each day of the year. After week one, they just seemed to flow from me without much effort, it was as if each day raised its own questions, challenges and hopes for me to capture.
As it happens by the end of 2009 I had a trilogy of inspirational verse books (spreading the 365 verses equally across each book), a book of short stories, a business book for Virtual Assistants and a special gift book for my family with personalised poetry. Who knew!
Truth; if someone had said to me at the beginning of the year you have to write a book (or 6) before the end of December I might have avoided saying ‘can’t’ but it would probably have been what I was thinking.
So what is the point here?
- We must not be afraid to set ourselves big goals, things we have never done before; they are all part of our growth and development. As Les Brown so eloquently quoted “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars”.
- Work from the place of ‘I can’ even when you don’t know the how; the universe will do its bit to get you there. “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.”
- Love what you do!This more than anything is what I believe my driving force was, the love of writing, the opportunity to express myself and to share my knowledge. “What I know is, is that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfils you, the rest will come” states Oprah Winfrey
And here we are in 2013, I have completed the 2nd draft of a new business book and am set to begin my journey into publishing. 9 years ago, redundant and not sure where I was going or what I wanted to do this would never have seemed possible. ‘Can’t’ would definitely have been my word of choice. Now I simply choose to believe I can… What about you?
